Selling electrical equipment
In the interests of consumer safety, our legal obligation under electricity safety legislation is to ensure that all electrical items are in-scope, safe and appropriately inspected, tested (where applicable) and maintained by a suitably qualified person* deeming them electrically safe, and as meeting safety criteria.
We ensure that electrical appliances meet the latest safety requirements, including having insulated pins.
Prescribed requirements
- If the item of in-scope electrical equipment IS tested for safety, it should meet the requirements set out in AS/NZS 5761 and be tagged as per the requirements of AS/NZS 5761;
- When the item of in-scope electrical equipment IS NOT tested for safety, the item of in‑scope electrical equipment will be —
DANGER – DO NOT USE OR CONNECT TO SUPPLY – THIS ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT MAY BE FAULTY AND SHOULD BE INSPECTED AND TESTED BY A COMPETENT PERSON IN ACCORDANCE WITH AS/NZS 5761.
Product acceptance criteria
Below we have developed a set of Product Acceptance Criteria below taking into account the ACCC advice on avoiding unsafe products and ACCC Product Safety information.
- General Checks.
- Is sturdy and stable.
- Has all parts and works correctly.
- Has no tears, sharp edges or points.
- Has had no changes made that will make it unsafe.
- Can be fixed, if necessary.
- Check for bans and mandatory standards and ensure products comply.
- Check for possible recalls via Recalls Australia website.
Customers consigning items to us may have only used the products for a short time, so products may be near new and in reasonably good condition. Despite this, products can still present a potential hazard. This is why we have a Product Acceptance List available here with clear guidelines to check through before having items delivered to our store for consignment or sale.
Goods retention requirements
To assist police in tracking and locating stolen goods, section 21(1) of the Act requires Renascence Studio to retain goods for seven (7) days prior to selling.
The Regulations exempt goods that have been purchased from Renascence Studio since goods available for sale by Renascence Studio have been through the mandatory retention period and can be resold immediately by the purchaser if they should choose to do so.
